The Prophet’s Sword

If there was one statement that a Prophet carried on his hilt into battle what would it be? What do you think was written on the sword of the Prophet Muhammad ?

On the authority of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib that when he took the sword of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) he found inscribed on a patch of the hilt the words, “Join him who cuts you off; Do good to him who does evil to you; and speak the truth even if it be against yourself.”

Related by Ibn al-Mulaqqin in al-Badr al-Munir (6/741) and Ibn Hajr al-’Asqalani in Talkhis al-Habir (3/1021). Classified as authentic by Imam Al-Albani in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah (4/542).

Without a doubt there is much to learn from this hadith. Even when pushed to war by the aggression and injustices of his opponents, the Prophet carried with him the teachings of mercy, justice, and forgiveness almost as though it were a reminder to his followers that a sword is not to be raised for personal vengeance or grudge. Rather, the life-long sword against such injustices is the lofty standard of reciprocating the evil actions of others with goodness and virtue. The best method to prevent societal strife and conflict is to join ties with one another and to build strong and healthy relationships. It is to renew such ties even with those who seek to cut you off in the hopes that your good actions will cause a change of heart or at the very least set a noble precedent. All these actions maintain peace and work to preclude conflict. Peace will thrive as long as there is justice, and the basis of justice is to speak the truth regardless of whether it is profitable or not. These are the messages that the Prophet had inscribed on his sword, and it was these messages that he carried into battle against those who persecuted and expelled the believers from their homes. And in fact, these messages are the true virtues!

May Allah azza wa jal enable us to follow the noble teachings of His Messenger: to show goodness even to those who do evil, to join ties even with those who sever them, and to always speak the truth for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

The Secret to Victory

Islamreligion.comAnd I advise you and those with you to be more cautious of your sins than you are of your enemies. Since, verily, the sins of an army are more harmful to them than their enemies.

Victory is given to the Muslims through the disobedience of their enemies to Allah, and if it was not for that we would not have an edge over them. [Don’t you see that] our number is not like their numbers, nor is our weapons like theirs.

Thus, if we became equal in our sins, they would be given the edge over us by their strength … and do not think that [even if we sin] our enemy is [still] worse than us and so would never be given power over us, since in many times were people overpowered by others that were more evil than them, like what happened to the Children of Israel, when they acted upon what upsets Allah, the disbelievers of the Magians (Magus) were sent on them and probed [even] into the homes, and it was a promise fulfilled (cf. Qur’an 17:5)”

This was the advice of the Khalifa, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab [R] to Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas [R] and his army just before the battle with the persians at al-Qadisiyyah.
